Inside Interiors—August 31 to September 30, 2019—is a nimble juxtaposition of design, furniture, painting, sculpture and photography in the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement of the nineteenth century and the Bauhaus program of the early twentieth century. This exhibition is hosted by Russell Steele and curated by Romanov Grave, an artist collective that has been producing online publications and curating exhibitions since 2010.

For “Inside Interiors,” Romanov Grave has selected a group of artists whose paintings, sculptures, and photographs take the world of interiors and furnishings as their subject matter. These works range from a pictorial “framing” of the elements of interiors to a conceptual “reframing” of the same.  Some embrace functionality, some resist it or complicate it.  Some isolate and decontextualize architectural details. Some distort our view of interiors; some invite in neighbors from the natural world or literature.  Some interiors are populated, some are lonely, but none are empty.

Alongside these objects the exhibition will combine choices by Russell Steele, picked from his impressive stock of retro and vintage objets. R E Steele Antiques is a much-admired source for collectors, and the dealer himself is esteemed for his learned grasp of the history of the decorative arts.  As one magazine reported, “Steele is always a trove . . . a gold mine’s worth of decorative art.  Equally matched by Steele’s encyclopedic knowledge of the past 70 years of decorative arts is his enthusiasm for artists, his intuitive and visceral response to the arts, and under-appreciated furniture designers.”
