Rico Gatson

Rico Gatson is an object maker inspired by Conceptualism and Performance Art who utilizes a variety of media; painting, sculpture, video and installation.  He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Question:

You work in a wide variety of media to generate art of immense visual appeal that lead viewers to confrontations with complex and challenging cultural issues.  You have been characterized as a strategically minded political artist, but also as an esthetician with something to say.  Is there a meaningful distinction there for you?

Answer:

In truth, I am fine with both characterizations.  I want my work to function on as many levels as possible so to be considered beautiful while having a social, spiritual and or political impact is ideal. If there’s a meaningful distinction, it is that the content is what compels me while I want to create works that are formally strong and seductive.
